Cancun Busses

Today we learned how to use the bus system in Cancun. The public busses fly up and down the hotel strip. And by fly, I mean they rip 120kph from stop to stop every two hotels, or if you signal one, they will come to a screeching stop to pick you up. We have not been brave enough to hail one from the side of the road yet, the official bus stops are more our speed. 

Every bus we took today was completely empty! It is basically like riding your own private bus for $1 instead of taking a $15 cab ride. 

You buy the tickets on the bus. They are thinner than the one ply toilet paper in the public bathrooms! 

It rained today quite a bit, and the busses still drove the same speed. There were huge puddles and pools of water in the road from the downpours and that didn’t change anything for the flow of traffic. The bus windows are all open because they don’t have AC, and the biggest surprise of the day was splashing through the puddles because all the water came in the bus!!!! It was like riding the log ride at Disneyland. No joke. After one splash, I closed these windows. 

In between bus rides, we saw our first Mayan ruins. We went to the Museo Maya de Cancun where they have a collection of Mayan artifacts.

Attached is a park with a trail through the mangroves to a small pyramid. It is pretty unbelievable to see these ruins in such close proximity to the resorts. 

We also visited the ruins at El Rey, which is right down the street. This area was different because it was a grassy open space with six structures and the king’s temple.
