Community Service

Today was a fantastic day for HMB Softball. We did our community service project working with the Second Harvest Food Bank helping distribute food to families in need in Half Moon Bay. For the first hour we sorted and bagged vegetables, bread, frozen chicken, milk, and other packaged food. We had to count carrots, and weigh potatoes so every family received an equal amount.

For the second hour we helped distribute it to families. People came with carts to pick up their food. Eighty-five families received food today. 

The most amazing part of the day was watching my players. Most had never really been exposed to this type of volunteer work, but they jumped right in and did everything they could to help. They worked together to get everything packed in boxes for the families. When people came to collect their food the girls were gracious, smiled, and offered to help carry things. I heard them practicing their Spanish and I was so impressed with how they carried themselves. The girls embraced helping a cause bigger than themselves and it was an experience they will never forget. 

This is the true purpose of high school athletics. Having an experience outside of the classroom that offers other ways to learn and grow while doing these things with people who you trust and are fully committed to. If we don't win a single game this year, it won't bother me because I know that my players are becoming confident leaders with integrity. I am really proud of them.
