North Shore Cut Short

This morning we were planning to spend the entire day on the North Shore going to the different surf and snorkeling spots. On our way out of town our tire pressure light came on. We stopped at 3 gas stations to add air, but all of them were out of order. Our plan was to stop at a fourth and before that happened we were 30 miles up the coast and at a surf spot. 

To get down to the water off the point of Hanalei you have to hike down these super steep stairs. At the bottom is a rope and slope that goes down to the sand. I heard it was particularly treaturous so I stayed on top of the cliff. 

It was a beautiful view!

After Syd surfed we went down the way to Hanalei Bay. We looked at the water for a few minutes and when we got back into the car to find a better parking spot we heard a huge crunch and immediately knew we had popped the tire. All bad. 

I called the rental office while Syd attempted to change the tire. We were on muddy grass and the jack kept falling over. Finally we found a flat metal sprinkler cover to rest the jack on. Without that there is no way Syd would have been able to get the tire off!

The guy on the phone told us we could drive 50mph for 150 miles on our donut tire. The good news was that we were in range for exchanging the car at the airport. 

I can happily report that after getting stuck in the mud, deflating tires, reinflating them, and then popping one, we now have a new rental car. It is a fresh start for 2018!
