Montara Mountain

To work off our Thanksgiving meals, the Koerper kids and I wanted to do something adventurous outside. We decided to hike Montara Mountain, which is north of Half Moon Bay and over looks Devils Slide. Even through I grew up right down highway 1 from it, I have never hiked to the top, and we couldn't have picked a better day to make the trek. The air was crisp, perfect hiking weather, and the ocean was clam and a pretty blue. There was no wind and not a single white cap in sight for as far out to sea as we could see.

The view over looking the two WWII forts along Devils slide that used to guard the Bay Area and the Golden Gate Bridge.
Kristin and I posing with the view.
The hike to the top took a little over two hours. Some of the walk was on trails but once we got higher it was an old dirt road that people used to get to the coast way back in the day.
At the top of the hill there was this impressive looking weather instrument and radio tower.
The view was amazing and I didn't expect to see as much of the Bay as we were able to. This is looking out toward San Francisco toward Marin across the GG. On the other side you could see the San Mateo bridge and the airport. And then while looking out toward Half Moon Bay you could see Pillar Point Harbor and south past the Ritz Carlton. Worth the hike!

It was fun to hang out with the Koerpers and reminisce about our childhoods. For a ways up the mountain we took turns asking questions like "What are 6 world destinations you want to visit?" or "What are you most proud of in your life so far?" It was interesting to hear everyone's goals and ambitions and how different all of us are even though we grew up together. So grateful to have life long friends in from HMB. We don't hang out as much as we used to, but we always pick up right were we left off.
