Wing Swing

Some 7th graders asked me to be on their dodgeball team again this year. They named the team Wing Swing, not sure why, and we had our first game today. There was one team I didn't want to play in the 16 team tournament and it was the team comprised of all the 9th grade girls who are on varsity team. I didn't want to play them because they had some fierce competitors and also Ashley, one of my players. I told her she better not get hurt because her elbow had been bothering her all week.

Of course, we were paired with girls because our team was the highest ranked 7th grade team and theirs was the lowest ranked 9th grade team. Our game was played on the lower tennis courts by the Marshall Center and it turns into a Gladiator environment. The court is surrounded my spectators and then people are hanging over the terraces to watch too. Dodgeball games at break are better attended than any other sports event. 

We played a really intense game today against the girls. Our team won the first game and then lost the second. The series went to a game 3 and the crowd was going nuts. At one point they were chanting "underhand" because they wanted me to pitch the dodgeball. Unfortunately the ball is too big for me to palm and I can't grip it well enough to pitch. 

It came down to 3 vs. 1 in the final round and we ended up winning!!! It was exciting, and people were surprised because we weren't the team favored to win. Usually 9th grade teams dominate. 

Wing Swing plays again in March. Hope we can pull off another upset!
