HWSB Camp Day 1

Today was the first day of my week long HWSB camp. We have 16 campers and about 5 varsity girls at camp this week. The day goes from 9-2 and we basically play softball all day. All of the girls were really enthusiastic, so it is fun coaching them. We have a few girls who are incoming 7th graders in camp, some girls already on the middle school team, and a few prospective players we are watching too.

This morning while it was still a little bit cool out, we did defense and base running. The girls learned how to take their leads properly and we did some racing. Younger girls love to race! But then they are over it when they come to me at the varsity level.

Melanie put together a great hitting circuit for the girls today. Some highlights were hitting with the hula skirts, and also the dog fetch throwers from Petco. When the hitters hit while wearing a hula skirt, it is a good indicator of how much they are using their hips. The more violently they use their hips, the more the skirt sways and swishes, and that equals power while hitting.

The Petco stick is used for throwing tennis balls for dogs, but it is actually the perfect training aid. It teaches hitters to have their back go straight to contact point. If you have a hitch in your swing, the tennis ball will fly out to the side. The object is to toss the tennis ball straight ahead, like you are skipping a rock.

We had a really fun first day of camp. Now I am sweaty and tired and can't drink water fast enough. I am looking forward to day 2 tomorrow. We are going to teach the girls how to slide and dive.
